Did you know that Sleeman has a rich and storied history involving pirates and bootleggers? True story!

During the 1600s and 1700s there was a family of pirates with the name Slyman who conducted illicit ventures out of England. In the 1800s the family changed their name to Sleeman and started to conduct legitimate business by opening a brewery and a chain of pubs.

John H. Sleeman launched his career as a malter and brewer and settled in the town of St. Catherines. This was before Canada’s independence from the British. The brewery later relocated to Guelph.

In the early decades of the 20th century, the Sleeman family changed the brewery’s name, sold it, opened new breweries, and renamed and sold some of them…it got a bit complicated.

Trouble befell the family in 1933 when some of the Sleemans were arrested and tried for smuggling their beer to Al Capone in Detroit. Their brewing licence was revoked and the next generation of Sleemans didn’t make beer. Boooo!

Decades later, in 1988 , the great great grandson of John H. Sleeman (also named John) rediscovered his family’s secret recipes and reestablished Sleeman Brewing and Malting Company. Hooray!
