David Ward – Latest release reviewed in Exclaim

David Ward

‘Golden Future Time’

By Alex Hudson

The latest instalment in Vancouver soul songwriter David Ward‘s expanding discography is Golden Future Time, which he will release on January 28. In the meantime, the entire album is available to stream for Canadian listeners in advance at Exclaim.ca.

While this is being packaged as one album, it actually features two halves. Side A is called Lost, and its four diverse songs sport prog-rock guitars and shapeshifting psychedelic arrangements. Opener “Slowly Through the Night” rises to pounding crescendos, while “Lost” and “Be Here” are more restrained and balladic. It was produced and mixed by Tom Dobrzanski (Said the Whale, the Zolas).

The B-side, on on the other hand, is called Golden Future Time, and it channels a more electronically futuristic space-disco sound. This include computerized arrangements and soul-indebted melodies. It was co-produced by Ward, along with Andrew Peebles, and mixed by Anthony Dolhai of DiRTY RADiO.
